How to Fish Difficulty Settings Guide

Compare How to Fish Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, including exact creature health and damage modifiers and what the official patch notes leave unknown.

Confirmed

How to Fish has three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Patch 1.0.9 lets you change the setting from the main menu or while in the game. Normal matches the pre-patch balance.

NormalUnchangedUnchangedSame balance used before Patch 1.0.9
Hard25% higher25% higherLonger fights with more incoming damage

The modifiers apply to all creatures according to the patch notes. Dazed Games does not list changes to bait, quest triggers, sale value, loot, movement, timers, or spawn rates. Treat those systems as unchanged only after verifying them in the current build; the official notes do not confirm them either way.

Where to change difficulty

Open the difficulty option from the main menu settings or the in-game settings. Patch 1.0.9 explicitly supports both locations, so you do not need to begin a new save merely to change the mode.

The official notes do not state whether a multiplayer host controls the setting for everyone, whether clients can choose separately, or when a changed value takes effect during an active boss fight. Change it outside the fight if you want a clean comparison.

Which mode to choose

Use Easy when creature combat is blocking island progress. A boss with 25% less health takes fewer successful hits, and its 50% damage reduction gives you more room to recover from mistakes. Normal preserves the original balance. Hard increases both the time needed to finish a creature and the cost of taking a hit.

Difficulty does not replace route knowledge. Missing bait, an unreturned boss item, or an undiscovered island path will still stop progression because Patch 1.0.9 only documents creature health and damage changes. Use the game map when the objective is unclear and a boss guide when a specific fight is the blocker.

Easy difficulty and the Easy achievement are different

Steam has an achievement named Easy, but its requirement is to kill a boss within ten seconds. The achievement description does not require the Easy difficulty setting, and Patch 1.0.9 does not say that changing difficulty grants or disables achievements.

Check the complete achievements list before planning a challenge run. Any claim that How to Fish difficulty settings change achievement eligibility remains Unknown until Dazed Games or Steam documents it.
