Bosses unlock the island route, but the trigger, safe arena, and hand-in are different for each fight.
The release route has ten named boss or miniboss encounters in community rosters, with five major progression chains: Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, Albatross, and the final whale sequence. Steam confirms that bosses gate island progression, while the exact ten-encounter roster is reported by independent guides rather than published as an official list.
Start with the obstacle that is stopping the route. Spider Crab is an opening arena fight tied to Boat Keys. Giant Piranha depends on the three-leech quest, Modified Leech bait, and a safe shoreline angle. Pufferfish depends on the Tourist's Endangered Species task, the Carrot reward, and a wide movement loop once poison covers the ground.
Prepare the summon item, healing, ammunition, and return route before casting. A kill can still leave progression blocked if the trophy or quest item is lost before the hand-in. Back up important progress before testing mods around a boss save.
Patch 1.0.9 lets the host change difficulty in the main menu or during play. Easy mode changes both incoming and outgoing fight pressure, so a guide recorded on Default or Hard may recommend more upgrades than an Easy run needs.
The safest guide states the patch, difficulty, solo or co-op setup, summon item, and required hand-in. Damage numbers without that context are poor planning tools after balance updates.
