How to Fish Cooking Guide: Grill, Food, and Value
Learn how cooking works in How to Fish, when to grill a creature, why burnt food matters, and how Patch 1.0.10 lets water clean cooked equipment.
Reported
Place a creature on an active grill and remove it after it cooks if you want food or a higher-value sale item. Leaving it on longer can burn it; eating one burnt creature is tied to the Yummy in my tummy achievement. Patch 1.0.10 also lets you clean a weapon or tool that was cooked by dipping it in water.

How to use a grill
- Bring a creature to a grill and start the grill if it is not active.
- Place the creature on the cooking surface.
- Watch the item rather than leaving the area.
- Remove it once cooked for normal use, or deliberately leave one item longer when attempting the burnt-food achievement.
- Keep quest creatures off the grill until their hand-in is complete.
Starting the grill is the requirement for Grillmaster. Eating burnt food is a separate achievement, so activating a grill does not complete both. Steam lists each as its own requirement.
Cook, sell, or keep
| Goal | Safer choice |
|---|---|
| Need healing for a boss | Cook an ordinary spare catch and keep it accessible |
| Need money | Compare the cooked sale value before using a rare or required creature |
| Active quest names the creature | Keep it uncooked until the hand-in is complete |
| Need Yummy in my tummy | Burn and eat one expendable creature |
| Need Competitive eating | Follow the achievement requirement for eating a mini-boss; do not substitute an ordinary catch |
Community reporting describes cooked catches as more valuable, including a 1.5x sale-value relationship used in Rich! Millionaire planning. That multiplier is not stated in the official achievement list, so verify the displayed shop value on the current build before committing an expensive catch.
Clean a cooked weapon or tool
Patch 1.0.10 added a recovery step for equipment placed on the grill: dip the cooked weapon or tool in water to clean it. Move to safe shallow water, lower the affected item into the water, then check its appearance before continuing.
This change removes the need to treat an accidentally cooked tool as permanently ruined. It does not say that water restores a sold, dropped, or missing item, and it does not replace the save-system recovery limits.
Avoid losing a quest item
Read the current objective before cooking any boss drop, rare catch, or named creature. If the task says to bring something back, finish the hand-in first. Keep cooking items in a separate inventory position so a fast interaction does not consume the wrong catch.
For the large sale required by Rich! Millionaire, use the separate roulette guide to understand the reported high-value wager route and its risk. Cooking can raise a sale value, but roulette can also destroy the wager, so neither system should use an irreplaceable quest item.
